JUMPSTART SC is a South Carolina based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the lives of inmates on the inside and outside of prison in South Carolina. We accomplish our mission by addressing the spiritual, educational, employment, healthcare, housing, and family relationship needs of current and former prisoners and assisting with their re-entry into society.
In 2008, a small group of volunteers, supported by the chaplain at Tyger River Correctional Institution, began ministering to the men inside. Most were retired, while two of our founding members worked night jobs (one in janitorial office work and the other in pizza delivery) to provide for their families while answering God's call to prison ministry. Together with their wives, they gathered to pray, share challenges, and explore how they could partner in the mission of “setting the captives free”—and from those humble beginnings, the vision for JUMPSTART was born.
Inmates can apply to participate two years before their release date.
The JUMPSTART program begins with a 40-week intensive discipleship process that includes a class curriculum focused on transforming lives through:
The program uses unique, peer-to-peer assessments that ensures accountability and drives growth. The program stresses daily living out of our core values of accountability, responsibility, and submission to authority.
Upon completion of the 40-week inside program and release from prison, the 12-month outside program provides participants a Christ-centered program with:
JUMPSTART has fifty participants on the outside at any given time and is currently at capacity.
JUMPSTART SC has a 96% success rate among participants who complete both the Inside and Outside Programs. This means that 96% of graduates do not return to prison within three years of their release.
Successful participants are:
Our focus will be to put in place the necessary infrastructure and staff for JUMPSTART’s long term organizational growth and sustainability. Our plan includes “Restoration Village Upstate” (a JUMPSTART Community), a community unlike any other. The village will provide transitional housing for those re-entering society from prison in a community setting that prepares them to be productive citizens. Included will be short and long-term housing along with support staff buildings and village facilities.
The three T’s sum up how you can help:
Yes. We partner with Fidelity and can receive gifts of stock. Giving in this manner has huge tax benefits as donors can avoid the capital gains from stock that has increased in value. This helps donors have an even greater impact!
Your gift directly supports life-changing programs that equip men and women to rebuild their lives after incarceration. Donors have the option to choose to give to a restricted fund for initiatives such as Restoration Village or other capital projects or to our unrestricted operations account. Unrestricted giving donations fund housing, job training, discipleship, and essential needs that help participants find purpose and stability.

JUMPSTART SC was never meant to be just an inside program. Our goal is to help men and women build their lives on faith, because without that foundation, many return to old environments marked by broken relationships, unstable housing, and lack of support which often leads back to incarceration. By strengthening both their faith and practical skills, we help ensure lasting restoration and true independence.
The transitional program is two years long.
Individuals must successfully complete JUMPSTART’s in-prison program to be considered for admission into the transitional program. Our 360° assessment ensures those who finish the program successfully are prepared for re-entry. This keeps the community safe and ensures resources go to those who are demonstrating they are eager to make the most of the transformational opportunities afforded through the generosity of donors.
For the purpose of relational discipleship, we ask our mentors to meet with their mentee once a week or every other week. Consistency in any relationship builds trust.
Absolutely, we would love to have you! You can view our upcoming events and register to join here.
JUMPSTART SC is a 40-week discipleship program that meets once a week. We ask volunteers to commit to attending each class throughout the full 40 weeks. Occasional absences are understandable, but we look for those who desire to walk faithfully with participants and, ideally, make a multi-year commitment.
Each volunteer completes a background check and, once approved by the Department of Corrections, participates in an orientation specific to the institution they’ll serve in. Before entering, all volunteers also complete JUMPSTART curriculum training to help them feel confident and prepared to serve.
Yes, you may be eligible to serve. There are certain restrictions determined by the Department of Corrections, which our team will review with you on a case-by-case basis.
No. The Department of Corrections does not allow volunteers to serve in a facility where a family member or friend is currently incarcerated.
We do our best to place volunteers at their preferred location, but sometimes we may invite you to serve where the need is greatest if it’s within a reasonable distance.
JUMPSTART SC is a Christ-centered ministry built on discipleship. We ask that all volunteers be born-again believers who have a personal relationship with Jesus and a desire to help others grow in their faith. True change is not possible apart from Christ.
